While Chekhov’s father, Pavel, was a strictly devout Orthodox Christian who led the parish choir, his violence wore away at his children and wife-leaving many today to believe that he is in fact the inspiration for Chekhov’s many literary takes on hypocrisy in his work. He grew up in Taganrog, a south Russian port city, as the third of six children living under the rule of an abusive father. Chekhov’s early life was one of struggle and desperation.

The story begins abruptly and ends open, with a hopeful look Gurov and Anna in the future. The Lady with the Dog is one of the most beautiful and artistically accomplished prose works of Chekhov. It has since been included in several collections and considered as one of the best-known stories of Chekhov. It was first published in December 1899 in the journal Russian Thought (Russkaya Mysl) under the subtitle "A History" (Rasskaz). The play was written in the city of Yalta where Chekhov lived at the request of your doctor's advice due to advanced tuberculosis. It is a fact that the writer tries to show the struggle that they experience as they prevent their affair from happening, especially since they were already married and their won respective families to live with.
