It has since been included in several collections and considered as one of the best-known stories of Chekhov. It was first published in December 1899 in the journal Russian Thought (Russkaya Mysl) under the subtitle "A History" (Rasskaz). The play was written in the city of Yalta where Chekhov lived at the request of your doctor's advice due to advanced tuberculosis. It is a fact that the writer tries to show the struggle that they experience as they prevent their affair from happening, especially since they were already married and their won respective families to live with.
